Sailed from Natal to Plymouth, England aged 24 aboard the Gaika which arrived in London on 26 June 1917. Presumably to join the war.
Dale Schultz has an envelope from a letter sent by Hugh Lutkens to his future wife franked 23 February 1918. The envelope reads:

Esther Jane Lepper was known as 'Jen' hence the 'Jean'

Letter from his daughter Pat, February 2000
During the First World War he first of all served in the South West Campaign and later was sent to England for officer training. This is how he met my mother. Funnily enough, Lepper is also a German family name from the Hamburg area. They married after the armistice and Mum came out to South Africa on a troop ship, settling in Durban.
