Deceased Name: LAWRENCE SCHREIB, 87

Date of Death

Army veteran enjoyed building model airplanes
Lawrence Schreib Sr., 87, a World War II veteran and longtime Staten Islander, died Sunday at home.

Born in East Rochester, N.Y., he joined the U.S. Army and served two tours during World War II. A sergeant, Mr. Schreib saw duty in Australia and New Guinea. He married Signe Knudsen in 1941 and the couple moved to Eltingville to rear their family.

Mr. Schreib worked as a mechanic for the former Memoly Motors, Port Richmond, before retiring in 1983. In 1993, he moved to Annadale.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed building and flying model airplanes at Miller Field in New Dorp and spending time with his family.

"He loved being with his grandchildren, Ellen, Beth and Sandra, and his nine great-grandchildren, who saw him nearly everyday," said his daughter-in-law, Gail Schreib.

Mr. Schreib was a member of Bethel Evangelical Free Church, Eltingville.

His wife of 42 years, Signe, died in 1983.

In addition to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, Mr. Schreib is survived by his son, Lawrence.

The funeral service will be tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.

There is an enlistment record on ancestry which I believe is his but its has a birth year of 1856 which I believe to be an error as the person would have been 83 years old when enlisting in 1939!
