Following their marriage, he spent 19 months in the South Pacific as a naval pilot where he was a decorated member of the famed "Black Cats" squadron. Upon his return, he was stationed in Pensacola, Florida as a flight instructor for the duration of the war. He remained in the Naval Reserves after the war and held the rank of Lt. Commander.

After returning to Indiana, he taught business at Indiana Senior High School and subsequently became a Professor in the Business Department at IUP. In 1961, he was appointed Dean of Men and served in that capacity until 1970. After two years as a professor in the Business Department, he was appointed Dean of the Business School. It became the largest school at IUP and achieved national recognition. He also served as Vice President and President of the IUP Foundation.

Elwood was a member of Graystone Presbyterian Church where he had been a Deacon, Elder and Trustee. He also served as Clerk of the Session for 19 years.
